St. John Lutheran Celebrates India Mission
India missionary Nijhar Ekka will be at St. John Lutheran, Summerfield, Feb. 12 and 13 to celebrate her work with her sponsors Hope Lutheran Church of The Villages and St. John Lutheran. The program on Saturday, Feb. 12, will begin with a concert at 4 p.m. in the sanctuary. Organist Bob Dunbar and the Summer Springs women's barbershop chorus will perform in concert.
The Rev. Nijhar Ekka of Ranchi, Jharkhand, India will be at St. John Lutheran, Summerfield on Feb. 12 and 13 when she will preach at all three services. She is shown here teaching at the Multi-Purpose Learning Center she and her husband have built in Ranchi.
At 5 p.m. there will be a fund-raising dinner prepared by St. John's own iron chef, Joe Guilfoil, which will include a chicken dish and be served by waiters from St. John's men's group. The $10 donation for the dinner will help fund the Rev. Ekka's trip from Minneapolis to Florida. She is back in Minnesota to finish her doctoral dissertation at the University of Minnesota after spending several years in her home area of Ranchi, Jharkhand, India, developing a Multi-Purpose Learning Center which she and her husband the Rev. Dr. Neeraj Ekka have built from the ground up and where they have begun training local lay people for mission work in the area and also developed programs for area children. Ranchi is in northeast India and is home to the Oraon people, a non-caste culture. The Ekkas are both graduates of Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN.
On Sunday, the Rev. Nijhar Ekka, a dynamic preacher, will preach at all three of St. John's worship services--7:45 and 11:15 a.m. traditional and 9:45a.m. family service. All are invited to meet her and hear her message. She will continue her speaking on Monday in Fruitland Park at the Association of Lutheran Older Adults Senior Fest with afternoon breakout sessions discussing the India Mission Project. The Ekkas and their mission are supported by donations from members of a number of U. S. churches through the World Mission Prayer League whose offices are in Minneapolis.
Here is the Rev. Nijhar Ekka with her husband, the Rev. Dr. Neeraj Ekka and their four children. The girls, Maani and Jhumpa are with their mother in the U.S., while the boys, Urbas and Puna are still in India with their father, but they all hope to be together in Minnesota soon.
