Ashley Nicolls

Ashley Nicolls

PrAshley Nicolls is living her dream as the associate pastor in her first call with St. John Lutheran Church. She grew up in northern Minnesota with the hopes and dreams of living in Florida. (Those Minnesota winters get long. She has always had a love for palm trees). Her passion growing up was playing baseball. She played baseball on boys’ teams and also traveled around the country to play women’s baseball. In high school she also played soccer, ice hockey, and fast-pitch softball. She graduated from Hibbing High School in 2000. She slowly made her way south as she attended the University of Wisconsin-Superior where she received her undergrad degree majoring in Mass Communications with a Broadcast Journalism emphasis and a minor in Women’s Sports (she created her own minor combining Women’s Studies, coaching, and athletic training classes along with her credits from varsity athletics in soccer, ice hockey, and fast-pitch softball) in 2003. After undergrad, she continued her southward trek and attended Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa. She did a year internship at Trinity Lutheran Church in Laramie, Wyoming. She graduated with her Master’s of Divinity from Wartburg on May 13th 2007. On October 10th 2007 she was ordained at her home congregation in Hibbing. The date of her ordination was set specifically on October 10th because that was also her baptismal day 25 years earlier. She made the final jump south when she started at St. John on Reformation Sunday (October 28th) 2007 and was installed on the Baptism of our Lord Day (January 13th) 2008. Throughout the call process she was known as Ashley because she was not a pastor yet. The transition from Ashley to Pastor Ashley was difficult for some so she encouraged them to call her Prashley (which was a life long nickname for several reasons that you’ll just have to ask her about). She continues to be inspired by all who are a part of St. John as she leads St. John to Live the Word, Proclaim Christ, and Fill the Need.

Retired Clergy

Elmer Burrall

Elmer Burrall

Elmer Burrall was rostered on Oct. 9, 1950 when he, and his first wife Kay, were commissioned as lay missionaries to India at the convention of the ULCA in Des Moines, Iowa. They sailed for India on Nov. 7th of that year, and arrived on Jan. 2, 1951. Upon their arrival, Elmer began his service as Mission Builder.

During his first furlough, in 1956, he became a freshman at Hamma School of Theology, Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. After his second term in India, he spent two more years at Hamma, and graduated in 1964. He was ordained in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, India on Dec. 18, 1964. His call was to Youth Work in India, but health problems compelled him to leave the mission field and spend a year and a half as Interim Pastor for the High Clerc Church in the Hill Station of Kodaikanal in South India.

Returning to the States in 1964, he was called to serve Trinity Lutheran Church in Lewisburg, Ohio. After leaving there, he served as pastor to Good Shepherd Lutheran, Washington Court House, Ohio for two years. Following that, he moved to Fountain Hills, Arizona where he became involved in establishing Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church. A short stay there led to a pastorate at Hope Lutheran Church, Midland, Texas, and then a two year stint as Regional Director for Church World Service CROP Walks in Oklahoma. He finished his active ministry as Pastor of Christ Lutheran Church in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas from 1979 to 1995. In 2004 he moved to Florida and he and his wife Anne Bowes-Burrall have been active in St. John Lutheran Church since then.

Neils Carlsen

Neils Carlsen

Niels Carlsen was born to Dr. and Mrs N.C. Carlsen of Royal IA. on June 23, 1927. His father was the President(now called Bishops) of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church. Three years later the Carlsen family moved to Blair NE. where he graduated from High School in 1944.

Upon graduating from High School, he volunteered for the old Army Air Corp and was sent to Creighton University and Wyoming University. While at Wyoming the Army Pilot Training Program was closed. Since he wanted to become a Pilot, he transferred to the Navy Pilot Training Program. A few days before arriving for the pilot training, it too was closed and he was transferred to the Battleship USS West Virginia serving for 18 months. Following that, he returned to Blair and attended Dana College. Upon graduation he taught High School one year, then married his wife Natalie. They moved to Longview WA where he was in the Florist Business with Natalie's father.

At this time Niels had no intention for the ministry. He had two brother pastors and two sisters married to pastors and he felt that was enough. Three years later he felt the call to the ministry and returned to Blair to attend Trinity Seminary. After graduation, he became an Air Force Chaplain, serving at Biggs AFB, and Fairchild AFB. He left active duty to serve a congregation at Pasadena CA. Four years later he was asked to start a new mission congregation in Aptos, located on the Monterey Peninsula. Two years later he was recalled to active duty and served at Hamilton AFB, and Travis AFB, and a short time in Vietnam. When he was released from active duty he returned to Christ Lutheran Congregation in Aptos until his retirement. Following retirement he served three years as an interim pastor at St. Stevens Lutheran in Santa Cruz, and St. Luke Lutheran in Sunnyvale CA. He has served a total of 31 years as an Air Force Chaplain in Active Duty and Reserve.

In 2001 he and his wife moved to Florida and purchased a home at Del Webb where they soon found St. John Lutheran, which has become their second home. They thank God for His Grace which has been sufficient for all of their needs.
